Report Launch -- Defending Democracy in Exile: Policy Responses to Transnational Repression
In 2021, the world witnessed increasingly bold attempts by governments to stifle dissent within and outside their borders. These audacious acts of transnational repression –where governments reach across national borders to silence dissent among diaspora and exile communities – evinced a disregard for international law, democratic norms, and state sovereignty.

Following on last year's watershed Freedom House report on transnational repression, "Defending Democracy in Exile: Policy Responses to Transnational Repression" finds that, despite increasing awareness, transnational repression continues to threaten human rights and democratic values globally because few tools exist to protect those whom it targets.

Learn more during our virtual report launch on Thursday, June 2 at 10 a.m. ET.

Following a presentation of the report findings, New York Times columnist Max Fisher will moderate a panel discussion with Iranian author and activist Roya Hakakian and journalist Bradley Jardine on recent incidents of transnational repression and what can be done to solve the issue moving forward.
